Day 2: Tel Aviv City Tour

Your Bar Mitzvah Tour of Israel starts with a visit to the Diaspora Museum, where you can learn about the evolution of the Jewish heritage. A fascinating and entertaining museum, this is a fantastic first-stop on any tour and particularly valuable for first-time visitors!  Enjoy a comfortable, air-conditioned driving tour of downtown Tel Aviv, discovering the business and entertainment districts. Make a poignant stop at Rabin Square and visit the memorial marking the spot where former Prime Minister Itzhak Rabin was assassinated in 1995.   We’ll then continue on to discover Old Jaffa, an 8000-year-old port city and now a charismatic neighborhood filled with art galleries, theatres, and excellent restaurants. Discover the remnants of ancient worlds and explore the beautifully restored quarter of the dedicated artists who created this incredible place.   Nearby, is where we’ll find Neve Tzedek, Tel Aviv’s oldest neighborhood which was built in 1909. We’ll leisurely stroll along Nahalat Binyamin, one of the city’s outdoor pedestrian malls and a bustling hub home to boutiques selling handmade souvenirs, jewelry, and objets d’art, as well as ever-present street musicians that bring the street to life.  By mid-afternoon, it will be time to head to the neighborhood around Sheinkin Street, a colorful and eclectic area renowned for its trendy vibe, unique shops, and outdoor café life.  You will then be transferred in comfort to Jerusalem where you will stay overnight.

Day 3: Caesarea, Zichron Ya’akov, Akko

This morning, we will move on first to Caesarea, an ancient city built by King Herod the Great over 2000 years ago. The town served as a key Mediterranean transport hub for centuries and the historic port, along with its nearby national park, is an outstanding highlight to discover. The park houses a Roman amphitheater and hippodrome once used for chariot racing.   During your visit, you’ll hear about Caesarea’s pivotal role in Jewish history and will have a chance to experience the history of the region via interactive displays using state-of-the-art technology.  After we visit Caesarea, we’ll move on to Carmel Mountain to visit Zichron Yaacov, one of the first settlements to be built during Israel’s initial immigration wave. We’ll guide you through the Atlit Detainee Camp, a former detention center established by the British in the 1930s. Today, it does an excellent job of retelling the heroic struggle of Jewish immigrants.  We’ll take a further step back in time with a visit to the recently-discovered underground Crusader city in Acre, hidden under massive piles of rubble for almost 300 hundred years. Parts of the subterranean city are now open to the public and a visit is immensely fascinating for history and culture lovers alike. Considered the ‘Pompeii of Israel’, Acre is a startling treasure in Israel and, during your visit, you’ll also have the chance to walk through the ancient town and oriental market, visiting the Mosque and the old port.  Our overnight accommodation will be in nearby Haifa.

Day 4: Haifa

The northern port town of Haifa is Israel’s third-largest city and we’ll start our tour today by exploring its bustling city center. We’ll begin with a tour of the old German colony, before ascending Mount Carmel for absolutely jaw-dropping views of the city, the Mediterranean, and the Jezreel Valley.  Whilst here, we will visit the revered Cave of Elijah, the reputed grotto where the prophet sheltered during his journey into the wilderness. This is a holy place of absolute wonder and an unmissable highlight in this part of Israel.  Haifa offers a bevy of interesting attractions so you will have plenty of highlights from which to choose: spend more time in Downtown Haifa or visit the Naval Museum, the stunning Baha’i Gardens, and Shrine or the resplendent Stella Maris Carmelite Monastery to see the exquisite frescos of St Elijah.  We’ll start heading east in the mid-afternoon, with the option of visiting the Sepphoris archeological site in central Galilee.  Tonight, we will either choose to stay in Tiberias OR the Golan Heights.

Day 5: Golan Heights

On the 5th day of your Bar Mitzvah tour, we’ll drive to the Golan Heights and visit the Museum of Antiquities, which does an excellent job of introducing the area’s rich ancient history even to those with absolutely no prior knowledge.  After an enlightening visit to the museum, it will be time to tour the wonderfully preserved Talmudic Village and Synagogue. This ancient settlement, which dates back to the 4th-century, is now an open-air museum that offers a fascinating glimpse into an ancient way of life – you’ll learn how olive oil was extracted, the wine was produced and bread prepared. With your expert Mazada Tours guide, Talmudic will be brought to life!  The Golan offers an array of activities for young and old alike and we leave it up to you to decide what you’ll do next. Perhaps you’d like to visit a local winery or hike on Mount Bental for breathtaking views. There’s an ancient Roman Bathhouse to discover or, if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you might like to join a thrilling ATV tour.  Enjoy your overnight stay in wonderful Tiberias.

Day 6: Tiberias, Rosh Pina, Tzfat

Israel boasts Four Holy Cities and, on this tour, you will be privileged to visit two.   Tiberias carries a 2,000-year-old heritage on its formidable shoulders and today is your chance to unveil its historic secrets. The town flanks the western shores of the Sea of Galilee and offers treasures of antiquities like few other cities in the world.   After Tiberias, we will move on to Rosh Pina, a charming town renowned for its great restaurants, cafés, and art galleries. A settlement initially founded by a group of ultra-orthodox Hews in the late 1800s, Rosh Pina was intended as an agricultural project, one of the first modern farming settlements in Israel. Many consider this the country’s very first village.  After feasting on local culinary specialties, we’ll visit the second Holy City on our tour: Safed (Tzfat). A guided walk through the historic core delivers fascinating stories of the Kabbalists and gives you ample time to explore the artist’s colony and meet a local artist.    After such a successful day’s exploration, we’ll return to Jerusalem for our overnight stay

Day 7: Jerusalem Old City

Today begins with spectacular views across Jerusalem and the Judean Desert from the peak of Mount Scopus. This is undoubtedly the best place to get a magnificent overview of the city and heading here early means you can avoid the mid-day group tour crowds.   The next stop on your Bar Mitzvah tour in Israel with Mazada will be to Mount Zion, home to the Tomb of David. This is one of the most important historical highlights of the country and a place you can discover on a guided tour. We’ll then have the chance to enter the city through the 16th-century Zion Gate, one of the seven ancient gates of Old Jerusalem. Our trail back allows us to explore the enchanting Armenian and Jewish quarters.  Enjoy a stroll along the Byzantine-era colonnaded Cardo avenue and explore the remains of the ancient perimeter wall of Jerusalem.   Immerse yourself in the Jewish Quarter and visit the 16th-century places of worship comprised within the Four Sephardic Synagogues complex. This is a far-too-often-overlooked treasure in Jerusalem and a visit is a very rewarding experience. Burnt to the ground and used as horse stables during the 1948 War of Independence, the four incredible sanctuaries were lovingly restored in 1967.  Archeology lovers may wish to include a visit to the Davidson Center this afternoon. The park is both a technological marvel and an ancient site. Learn more about the region’s ancient history through interactive audio and visual displays.   We’ll end the day’s exploration with a visit to the Western Wall (Kotel) For those of Jewish heritage, this is the holiest site of all and no-doubt one of the many highlights of this Bar Mitzvah tour. Touring the underground tunnels is a great way to enjoy an even more comprehensive experience.   Enjoy a relaxing evening and celebratory night in Jerusalem

Day 8: Jerusalem New City

Today is the time to pay homage to Israel’s heroes, so we’ll start the day with a meaningful visit to the Mount Herzl Military Cemetery, the last resting place of Israel’s former prime ministers and valiant soldiers who lost their lives in battle. We’ll complete our morning’s touring with a very moving visit to Israel’s official Holocaust homage: the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial. Here, your guide will give you all the time needed to ensure your experience is exactly as you wish it to be.  Taking in the sights of the city center, we will meander past Israel’s Parliament building, as well as the famous Menorah, today home to the Supreme Court.  Continuing our Bar Mitzvah Tour in Israel itinerary, we’ll visit the Israel Museum, an art and archaeology treasure that houses the Shrine of the Book, displaying the Dead Sea Scrolls. The museum is expansive and comprises a sculpture garden sprawled across six acres and displays that range from ancient gems to modern art.  For a fun and unique afternoon, let’s explore the marvelous Mahane Yehuda Market, meet local vendors, and feast on some incredibly delicious traditional foods. This is a great, fun, and delicious way to end our whirlwind day!  Enjoy another beautiful evening and overnight stay in Jerusalem.

Day 9: Masada and the Dead Sea

On day 9 of your Bar Mitzvah Tour, we’ll take you through the Judean hills to the desert so you can enjoy a cable-car ride and guide tour of the spellbinding Masada Fortress. Built by King Herod over 2,000 years ago, the Masada Fortress is the inspiration for our tour agency’s name and a place that’s very close to our hearts. Next on our schedule is a visit to the Ein Gedi kibbutz and Ein Gedi Nature Reserve, where walking trails lead to waterfalls and sensational views across the Dead Sea. Nearby is Qumran, home of the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered – a visit here can always be on the cards if you’re keen for more. Of course, you will not want to miss your chance for a therapeutic bathing experience in the Dead Sea – cover your whole body in mud, lie back and enjoy the sensation of floating on air, on one of the world’s saltiest bodies of water. The whole experience is an amazing tingling explosion and the mud is said to wonders for your skin and soul! Return to Jerusalem to enjoy a lovely evening and overnight stay.

Day 10: Ayalon Valley

The site of the famous battle to secure the route to Jerusalem, the Ayalon Valley is a fascinating place to explore and, this morning, we will do just that! Enjoy your drive to Latrun, as you pass farmland blanketed by almond trees and choose to take an optional tour of the Armored Corps Museum if you wish. This open-air museum is a wonderful spot for history lovers. The hill we’ll visit is replete with an abundance of important events in our country’s history, including the battle between Arabs and Crusaders, the Turks and British and, more recently, between Israelis and Jordanians. Our next port of call will be the Sataf National Forest, a wonderful wilderness area depopulated after the 1948 war. Walking routes abound and the feeling of being in such beautiful nature, complete with picturesque olive groves, so close to Jerusalem, is astonishing. Nearby Sataf is a bustling village renowned for its eclectic array of artists – a bevy of gorgeous galleries and boutiques await those who have an eye for beautiful creations. We’ll then drive to Tel Aviv, where you’ll enjoy a lovely evening and overnight stay.

Day 11: Free Day Tel Aviv

On the last full day of your Bar Mitzvah Toru in Israel, you’ll enjoy the dazzling city of Tel Aviv. Enjoy the last stint of souvenir shopping, feast with abandon, or spend a relaxing day on the beach. Indulge in your last night in Israel by visiting one of the world-class restaurants in Tel Aviv.
